About Augsburg: Kaisersee

The Kaisersee is a small gravel-pit lake on Augsburg's northern edge, on the boundary with Gersthofen. It lies north of the A8 Augsburg-Ost junction, west of the Augsburg airfield and east of the city's former landfill hill. It was dug in 1936–37 and covers about 4 ha. It is roughly 300 m long and 200 m wide, reaches about 4 m deep, and has a narrow peninsula. Fields surround it, but a 3–10 m belt of trees and shrubs screens the water from view. There are no big lawns, only small overgrown clearings and niches along the shore. The peninsula and these pockets are where people settle. The lake is an unofficial FKK spot: a German encyclopedia entry says nude bathers clearly outnumber clothed ones, and angling reviews from 2024–2026 complain about the nudists. The Lechfischereiverein Augsburg has owned the lake since 2010 and stocks it heavily, so anglers and bathers share the shore. The lake made international news in 2016 when an angler's line hooked a nude swimmer. Expect regular light-aircraft noise from the airfield.

Getting there

The lake is reached from Mühlhauser Straße (St 2035) and Gersthofer Straße (St 2381) in north Augsburg. There is no car park: visitors leave cars along the edges of the two state roads. From there, short informal paths through the tree belt lead to the shore. Cycling from Augsburg's northern districts is a practical alternative. We found no information on a direct bus stop. There are no toilets, kiosk or bins, so bring water and take rubbish home.

What visitors say

Nude bathers describe the Kaisersee as a long-established, mostly nude lake with secluded spots in the bushes and on the peninsula. Anglers who fish it, often in the same summer hours, are less positive: several 2024–2026 reviews call the nudist crowd tiresome, and one reports being insulted by a nude couple. Others say the lake is only quiet in bad weather. Expect no facilities and some aircraft noise.

Legal context

The Kaisersee is not an official bathing site and has no FKK designation by the city (2026). Nude bathing is long-standing and tolerated. Germany has no general ban on public nudity; nude bathing outside signposted FKK areas is a grey zone that depends on local bylaws and on whether other visitors take offence. The owner is an angling club, and friction between anglers and nude bathers is reported in 2024–2026 reviews.
