About Altwarmbüchener See

The Altwarmbüchener See is a 45–48 ha lake in Isernhagen, on the north-eastern edge of Hannover. It formed when sand was dug for the A37 'Moorautobahn' and opened for recreation in 1982. The main sandy beach (about 3,000 m² of sand plus a 30,000 m² lawn) is on the west side and is often very crowded. The east shore is quieter and more natural, and large parts of the surroundings are nature reserve. Facilities are extensive: changing buildings with toilets and showers, a beer garden, kiosks, a sailing and surf school, and a 3.5 km path around the lake. The city's official page does not mention any FKK area, and we found no other source describing nude bathing here. Swimming is only allowed at the designated bathing spots, so any nude use is unconfirmed and would fall outside the official rules.

Getting there

The address is Altwarmbüchener See 1, 30916 Isernhagen, next to the A37 north-east of Hannover. There are car parks, but the city page gives no number or price. Hannover's public transport also serves the area; check the city's directions sketch for the current route. The 3.5 km lakeside path is flat. Motor vehicles are banned inside the recreation area.

What visitors say

Visitors describe the west beach as busy and well equipped, and the east side as calmer and greener. Comments on seen.de mention litter, especially cigarette butts, and past complaints about dog waste. We found no reviews describing nude bathing here.

Legal context

Hannover's bathing rules allow swimming only at designated spots, and much of the shore is a nature reserve (as listed 2026). The official page lists no FKK zone. Germany has no general ban on public nudity; nude bathing outside signposted FKK areas is a grey zone that depends on local bylaws and on whether other visitors take offence.

Naturism at Altwarmbüchener See sits under Germany's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
