About Ahrensee
The Ahrensee is a 57-hectare lake just south-east of Achterwehr, west of Kiel in the Westensee area of Schleswig-Holstein. It consists of two basins, each about 10 metres deep in the middle, joined by a shallower ridge; the surroundings are farmland and a nature reserve. The municipality of Achterwehr runs a simple public bathing place here, and the district health authority's bathing-water profile notes that it is frequently visited by naturists. There is no separate nude section: nude and clothed bathers share the same generous, natural meadow, and a lake guide reports that the mostly young crowd makes the mix unproblematic. Facilities are minimal, just a toilet, with no lifeguard, kiosk or changing rooms. The lake floor is sandy but drops off fairly steeply, so non-swimmers need care. Water quality has been rated excellent in every assessment, with no history of blue-green algae. It suits people who want an uncomplicated, quiet lake swim in the countryside near Kiel rather than a resort beach.
Getting there
The bathing place is on the edge of Achterwehr, close to the A210 Kiel-Rendsburg motorway (exit Achterwehr). Parking near the bathing meadow is informal and limited. Achterwehr is served by regional buses from Kiel, and it is an easy bike ride from the western suburbs of Kiel. The meadow is reached on foot over grass; there are no surfaced paths into the water.
What visitors say
Lake guides describe the Ahrensee as increasingly popular with naturists, with nude and clothed visitors on the same meadow and a mostly young crowd that gets along without problems. Visitors praise the clean water; the lack of facilities means bringing your own food and drink.

Legal context
The Achterwehr municipal bathing place has no designated FKK area, but the Kreis Rendsburg-Eckernförde bathing-water profile (2018) records that it is frequently used by naturists, and nude and clothed bathers share the meadow. No conflicts or enforcement have been reported.
Naturism at Ahrensee sits under Germany's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
