About Waikuku Beach

Waikuku Beach is a long stretch of sand on Pegasus Bay north of Christchurch, with a small settlement and a patrolled swimming area near the main access. Walking a little way along the beach, away from the settlement, leads to empty dunes where nude sunbathing is informally accepted. The surf can be strong and rips form along this coast, so swim only where it is safe. Toilets and a holiday park are near the main entrance.

This New Zealand naturist beach is a clothing-optional place in a traditionally tolerated setting. Families are welcome.

Legal context

Naturism at Waikuku Beach sits under New Zealand's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
