About Prison Cove

Prison Cove, also known as Reenogrena Bay, is a small, sheltered rocky cove near Glandore in West Cork, about 4 km from the village, at the western end of the stretch of coast that runs from Clonakilty Bay toward Glandore Harbour. It has been used by West Cork naturists for years and is listed by the Irish Naturist Association. The beach is stony and slopes into a well-protected bay, which makes it a good spot to sunbathe and swim on calm days, but it is too small to walk along. At low tide a lot of seaweed is exposed, and regulars say beach shoes are a must because of the stones. The cove feels very secluded, although houses stand about half a kilometre away and families occasionally turn up, so a little awareness is wise. It is one of several West Cork places that the Association has proposed for naturist signage.

Getting there

Reaching the cove involves narrow country lanes with several turns, getting tighter near the end; using a map app and watching for local traffic is recommended. There is space for only about four cars near the beach, so arrive early or have a back-up plan. The walk from the parking space to the stones is short, but the stony beach is not suitable for wheelchairs. There is no public transport. Glandore, about 4 km away, has pubs serving food.

What visitors say

The few published accounts describe a quiet, well-sheltered cove that is good for swimming and relaxing, with warmer water among the seaweed at low tide. Visitors mention the tricky drive, tiny parking area and very stony beach, and advise bringing beach shoes and being considerate if a family arrives.
