About Playa La Macha
Playa La Macha is a small, secluded cove on the Pacific coast between Quepos and Manuel Antonio, hidden below forested hills and reached only by a steep trail. With no road, vendors or music, it has become the main clothing-optional spot in the Manuel Antonio area, especially for gay men, since the hotel built above nearby Playitas pushed nude bathing out of that beach. Nudity is optional and informal; it is most common in the quieter sections to the left and right of where the trail reaches the sand. On many days there are only five to ten people, and some visitors find the cove empty or fully clothed. The beach is short and its size depends heavily on the tide: at high tide it can shrink to a few metres of rocks, so low tide in the morning is best. Expect sand mixed with rock, occasional strong waves and rocky patches in the water, and wildlife such as monkeys and sloths in the surrounding forest. It is not a party or family beach.
Getting there
The unmarked trailhead is on the main road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio, with limited informal parking nearby (a 4x4 can sometimes go a little further). From there the trail is about 1.5 km and fairly steep: mostly wide gravel, then a narrow, muddy descent with ropes for the last 15-30 m to the sand. Landslides and washed-out sections are common. The climb back is hot and uphill, so bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes. Not suitable for people with mobility or balance problems or small children.
What visitors say
Visitors describe a beautiful, very quiet cove with few people and an easygoing clothing-optional atmosphere, popular with gay travellers. The hike is the main complaint: steep, muddy and hot on the way back, and the high tide can leave almost no beach. Several warn that nudity is not guaranteed and the cove may be empty or clothed. One phone theft has been reported, so keep valuables close.

Amenities
Legal context
Costa Rica has no designated nude beaches and no law authorising public nudity; nude sunbathing is tolerated only on remote beaches, and indecent exposure elsewhere can be treated as an offence against public decency. At La Macha nudity is an informal practice by a small number of visitors, with no signage and no reported enforcement.
Naturism at Playa La Macha sits under Costa Rica's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
