About Ototoka Beach

Ototoka is a remote, out-of-the-way west-coast beach about 20 km north-west of Whanganui and a little north of Kai Iwi Beach. It sits below cliffs that are known for fossil hunting: Whanganui District Council notes marine fossils over 1.5 million years old in the cliff faces. The way down from the car park passes the Ototoka stream's pool and small waterfall before reaching the sand. The beach is used for swimming and fishing and is rarely busy. Free Beaches NZ lists it as a clothes-optional spot: from the bottom of the track, walk 300-400 m north-west along the beach, around the visible point, to reach the area naturists use; some prefer to head south-east instead. There are no facilities, no shade apart from the cliffs, and no lifeguard patrol, and the open west-coast surf can be rough, so swim with care.

Getting there

From Whanganui take SH3 north and turn onto Maxwell Station Road (sealed), or go via Kai Iwi and Handley Road; both connect to Ototoka Beach Road, which ends at the beach. The last stretch is gravel and passes through farmland on a fenced track; an ordinary car usually manages if driven slowly, but take care after rain. Park at the cliff-top car park, then walk down the path past the pool and waterfall to the beach, and 300-400 m north-west to the nude area. No public transport.

Legal context

New Zealand has no designated nude beaches; nudity in public is only an offence under the Summary Offences Act 1981 if done in an offensive way. Ototoka has no council signage about nudity; its clothes-optional use is a custom recorded by Free Beaches NZ.

Naturism at Ototoka Beach sits under New Zealand's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
