About Mapoutahi Cove

Mapoutahi Cove sits below the Mapoutahi headland near Purakaunui, north of Dunedin, close to Doctors Point. The headland was once a fortified Māori pā, and the sandy cove beneath it is quiet enough that nude sunbathing is common. It is reached on foot, partly along the shore, so check the tide before you set out. There are no facilities, and visitors should respect the historic site above the beach.

This New Zealand naturist beach is a clothing-optional place in a traditionally tolerated setting. Families are welcome.

Legal context
