About Magheramore Beach

Magheramore is a sheltered, cove-like beach on the County Wicklow coast a few kilometres south of Wicklow town, reached down a lane of about 500 m from the main road. The Irish Naturist Association lists it as a naturist location. The beach is fine golden sand without pebbles and shelves gently, so the shallow water warms up more than on more exposed beaches and is safe for swimmers of all levels. Its seclusion is the attraction, though on holiday weekends it can get crowded with clothed visitors and may not suit naturists then. For more privacy the INA points to Magherabeg, a smaller and quieter beach to the south reached by a path across the fields. Magheramore made headlines in June 2018 when 2,505 women skinny-dipped here for breast cancer awareness, setting a Guinness World Record for the most nude swimmers at one event. There are no facilities at the beach.

Getting there

Magheramore is off the main road south of Wicklow town; turn down the lane of about 500 m toward the sea and park considerately where permitted. For Magherabeg, go down the same lane and, just before Magheramore, take the path on the right (south) across the fields, about 20 minutes on foot. There is no public transport to the beach; Wicklow town has rail and bus links. Not suitable for wheelchairs.

Legal context

Not designated; there are no official naturist beaches in Ireland. The INA lists Magheramore as a naturist location. Since 2017, public nudity in Ireland is an offence only where there is intent to cause fear, distress or alarm or where it involves sexual activity.

Naturism at Magheramore Beach sits under Ireland's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
