About Lake Kaniere
Lake Kaniere is a deep glacial lake about 25 km east of Hokitika on the South Island's West Coast, ringed by mountains and rimu forest. FreeBeaches NZ lists it as a nude bathing spot: a walking track starts roughly halfway around the lake, opposite Dorothy Falls, and leads to small secluded beaches with scattered rocks. The water is clear and cold, and sandflies can be fierce, so bring repellent. There are no facilities at the beaches, and the scenic reserve rules on fires and litter apply.
This New Zealand naturist beach is a clothing-optional place in a traditionally tolerated setting. Families are welcome.
Legal context
Naturism at Lake Kaniere sits under New Zealand's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
