About Zen Beach
Zen Beach is a short, sheltered beach on the west coast of Koh Phangan, just north of Srithanu (Sri Thanu), the village at the heart of the island's yoga and retreat scene. It is famous less for swimming than for sunsets: from late afternoon people gather with drums, DJs play chilled or tribal sets, and by sunset the crowd can reach the hundreds. Mornings are quiet. A Czech travel guide describes roughly half of the beach as nudist, with nude sunbathers keeping to the quieter part away from the bars and the sunset crowd. The sea here is very shallow over rocks and patches of coral: at low tide there is barely any water and at high tide barely any sand, so it is poor for swimming and water shoes are useful. Facilities are limited to a couple of bars, with accommodation mostly in Srithanu. Because public nudity is illegal in Thailand and police on Koh Phangan do fine nude tourists, nude use here is a risk rather than a right.
Getting there
From Srithanu on the west-coast road, a gravel track leads off the main road almost to the beach. Free parking for scooters and cars at the end. Taxis are scarce, so plan your return; expect about a 10-minute walk to the main road, and long scooter queues leaving after the sunset gathering around 9 pm. Sandy, uneven paths make it hard for wheelchairs.
What visitors say
Visitors mainly come for the sunset drum and DJ gatherings, which most describe as friendly and hippie-style, though some find it crowded and scene-heavy at peak time. Nude sunbathing at the quieter end is reported as common and largely ignored by other beachgoers, but others note it is illegal and that police occasionally act on the island. The shallow, rocky water disappoints swimmers. Tips include arriving an hour or more before sunset, bringing water shoes and planning transport back.

Legal context
Public nudity is illegal throughout Thailand: Criminal Code section 388 (indecent exposure in public) carries a fine of up to 5,000 baht, and foreigners can also face visa problems. In April 2025 a foreign couple was arrested and fined for nudity on Koh Phangan, and the Surat Thani deputy governor said nude sunbathing is a regular problem on the island's beaches, with offenders often fined. Zen Beach has no designated nude area.
Naturism at Zen Beach sits under Thailand's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
Researched 24 October 2026. No official source confirms naturist status, so treat it as unverified.
