About Maitai Bay
Maitai Bay is a sheltered horseshoe of white sand near the tip of the Karikari Peninsula in the Far North, with rocky headlands at each end that are popular for snorkelling. The Department of Conservation runs a large campsite behind the beach. FreeBeaches NZ lists the bay among places used for nude bathing, but the main beach is busy and family-oriented in summer, so nude use is best kept to the quieter rocky coves at either end. A rāhui bans fishing and gathering seafood in the area.
This New Zealand naturist beach is a clothing-optional place in a traditionally tolerated setting. Families are welcome.
Legal context
Naturism at Maitai Bay sits under New Zealand's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
