About Inch Beach

Inch Strand is a sand spit about 5 km long that juts out from the southern shore of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry into Castlemaine Harbour, with open Atlantic beach on one side and mudflats and salt marsh on the other. It is backed along its whole length by a broad system of high, rolling dunes, designated a Special Area of Conservation, which shelter natterjack toads, choughs and rare plants such as petalwort. The beach shelves gently, which makes it popular with surfers, kitesurfers and kayakers near the access point by Inch village, where most clothed visitors stay. The Irish Naturist Association, which calls it one of the best beaches in Ireland and the main naturist spot in Kerry, advises walking about half a mile out along the strand until you are past the textile bathers; beyond that the beach and dunes empty out quickly and naturists from Ireland and abroad spread along the remaining kilometres toward the tip. There is no shade on the strand, and the Atlantic water stays cool even in summer.

Getting there

From Tralee take the N70 to Castlemaine, then the R561 west for about 12 miles to Inch village, where the road leads onto the beach access at the base of the strand. Most visitors park near the beach entrance; parking arrangements and any charges were not confirmed. From there walk out along the firm sand for at least half a mile, past the surfers and family groups, before undressing. The walk is flat but long if you want real seclusion. Facilities are concentrated at the village end only.

Legal context

Inch has no official naturist designation; the dunes are a protected Special Area of Conservation, so keep to the beach and established tracks. The Irish Naturist Association lists the strand as a naturist location (2020) and no conflicts or enforcement were reported in sources found.

Naturism at Inch Beach sits under Ireland's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Frequently asked questions

Where do naturists go on Inch Strand?

Walk at least half a mile out along the strand from the village access, past the clothed bathers and surfers; the further toward the tip, the quieter it gets.

Is Inch an official nude beach?

No. It is listed by the Irish Naturist Association as a naturist location, but there is no signage or designation.

Can I go into the dunes?

The dunes are a Special Area of Conservation with protected species, so stay on the beach and existing tracks.

Is it good for swimming?

The gentle gradient suits paddling and surfing; the Atlantic is cold and conditions change, so do not swim alone.
