About Strandbad Gänsehäufel (FKK-Bereich)
Gänsehäufel is Vienna's largest open-air lido, occupying a wooded island of about 33 hectares in the Alte Donau in the Donaustadt district. Run by the city since it opened in 1907, it has about 1.2 km of natural sandy shoreline, big lawns with some 2,000 trees, three heated pools including a large wave pool, play areas, snack bars and rows of tiny rented beach cabins. The FKK area is a separate section in the southern part of the island, where only nude bathing is allowed and photography is prohibited. It has its own stretch of shore on the Alte Donau, lawns and tree shade, and it is known as the calmest part of the lido, with a loyal following of regulars. The water of the Alte Donau is calm and warm in summer, and lifeguards watch over the lido.
Getting there
Take U1 to Kaisermühlen; in the bathing season a free lido bus runs from there to the entrance, or walk 30 to 40 minutes. Bus 92A stops at Schüttauplatz, about 500 m away. The paid car park (about 8 euros a day) fills early on hot days; there are free bike racks. Pay the day ticket at the entrance and walk through the lido to the southern FKK area. The lido is barrier-free, with paths usable by wheelchairs and a free electric shuttle for visitors with reduced mobility on request.
What visitors say
Reports describe the FKK area as the quietest part of a very busy lido, with a devoted following of regulars, plenty of tree shade and direct access to the calm Alte Donau. On hot days the lido as a whole is crowded, the free bus from the U1 can be packed near closing time and the car park fills early, so guides suggest arriving early.
