About Doctors Point Beach
Doctors Point sits at the northern edge of Blueskin Bay near Waitati, about 20 km north of Dunedin. The point and its beaches are public reserve on land once owned by a group of Dunedin doctors. Around the point the shore breaks into sandy coves, rocky outcrops and sea caves, reachable along the beach at low tide. Naturists from the Southern Free Beaches club have used it for years, and the club's World Naked Bike Ride has finished here with a beach walk and lunch. The beach is also used by families, walkers and kayakers, so nude bathers head for the coves away from the car park. Wildlife, including penguins, uses the shore. There are no facilities at the beach, and the water is cold most of the year.
Getting there
From Waitati, follow Doctors Point Road to the car park at its end, then walk onto the beach. The coves and caves around the point are reached along the sand and rocks, and only safely around low tide, so check the tide before setting out so you are not cut off on the way back. There is no public transport to the point. The walk is on sand and rock and is not wheelchair accessible.
