About Carters Beach

Carters Beach is a seaside settlement about 6 km west of Westport on the South Island's West Coast, with a sheltered sandy beach that runs for more than 9 km from the Buller River jetty towards Cape Foulwind. FreeBeaches NZ lists the beach near the Beachside development as a place for informal nude bathing. The quieter stretches away from the settlement are the most suitable. It is an open, exposed coast, so check surf and tide conditions, and keep to discreet areas away from houses and families.

This New Zealand naturist beach is a clothing-optional place in a traditionally tolerated setting. Families are welcome.

Legal context

Naturism at Carters Beach sits under New Zealand's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
