About Breaker Bay

Breaker Bay lies on the south-east coast of the Miramar Peninsula near Seatoun, facing the entrance to Wellington Harbour. It is a bay about 600 metres wide, with pockets of sand and rock between the coast road and the sea. Clothed bathers gather near the roadside car park, while nude sunbathing has long been tolerated towards the far end of the bay, round the point, where people go to be out of sight of the road. The beach is shared with families and dog walkers, so discretion matters. There are no toilets or changing rooms, the beach is not patrolled, and the bay can be windy, especially when the wind comes from the Cook Strait side. The water is cold and rocky. Nudity here is informal rather than an official nude-beach status, and none of the sources reviewed describes a designated area.

Getting there

The car park is on the roadside above the bay, just before the road climbs over Point Dorset, and a track leads down to the beach. Parking appears to be free roadside parking; check for signs before you park. The sources reviewed do not give walk-in time or the track's gradient. Bring water and shoes for the rocks. There are no toilets or changing facilities on the beach. For public transport, check current bus routes to Seatoun on the Metlink site, as I did not confirm them. Access for wheelchairs is not confirmed.

What visitors say

Reports say clothed bathers stay near the car park while nude sunbathing takes place at the far end of the bay. The beach is shared with families, so discretion is expected. Visitors mention the wind, cold water, lack of toilets and a beach with no lifeguards. The atmosphere is low-key. Sources are mostly travel and user-maintained guides, so details may be dated.

Legal context

No official nude-beach status was found, and nudity is tolerated rather than sanctioned. A 2008 report said Wellington City Council repealed a bylaw restricting nudity on public beaches, and a 2009 council report said it would rely on police and the Summary Offences Act for offensive behaviour. Nudity is generally lawful in public unless it is disorderly or offensive. No current council position was found.

Naturism at Breaker Bay sits under New Zealand's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
